Steve Jobs influence and a review of 2011 PDF Print E-mail

As I sat on the couch the last few days nuturing a nasty flu bug, I read the Biography of Steve Jobs.

I am sure many of you have read it as well. It is as much a personal reflection to me as it was a chronology of Steve's life. I grew up in the shadow of the tech industry just a few years behind Steve. I actually headed to Silicon Valley after I graduated in 1982. I too sat in the reception lounge of Apple in Cupertino with countless other grads seeking employment.

I saw that Jobs had simply taken the customer experience as the central focus of everything Apple should, would and could do. The book explains the challenges in delivering on this promise.

I have been working with some new developers on a strategic platform which brings new ways to engage with customers and prospects. The usual model is to gateway the WiFi and force feed some sort of commercial viewing or give away personal info or gather feedback to allow you onto the Internet.

I have been reviewing ads all over the net which are looking for Social Media Gurus, Experts and Strategists. This is a sign of the times and also indicative of the major disconnect in the value chain between agencies and clients.

The other shocking connection that I am sure any saavy client can uncover is that the agencies are scrambling for talent while trying to make profits. I looked on Craigslist and saw 3 such ads posted just today.

I really liked this video by Forrester analyst James McQuivey. Social Media is a game changer in the context of this video.

Just finished looking over the social media handbook from Accenture. It does a good job of framing the background of social media as it crept into business, went into trial and error mode, full testing and pilots to now getting on with implementation.

Strategy planning is imperative and top down is the only way to go as social strategy is required across all levels and departments. Social media is not just another channel to exploit.
